A dynamic identity model for misinformation in social networks, an agent-based model of social identity and misinformation dynamics.

I developed this model as a part of my master’s thesis, “Does social identity drive belief and persistence in online misinformation? An agent-based modelling approach” at University College Dublin, Ireland (2024-2025).

The purpose of this model is to further understand the dynamics of misinformation sharing as an expression of social identity. I introduce a framework to understand the influence of self-categorisation on misinformation persistence in social network. It integrates a social learning model with the Dynamic Identity Model for Agents (DIMA) using simple logic to simulate the social trade-offs driving misinformation and observe the effects on misinformation spread.

This model examines language dynamics within a social network using simulation techniques to represent the interplay of language adoption, social influence, economic incentives, and language policies. The agent-based model (ABM) focuses on interactions between agents endowed with specific linguistic attributes, who engage in communication based on predefined rules. A key feature of our model is the incorporation of network analysis, structuring agent relationships as a dynamic network and leveraging network metrics to capture the evolving inter-agent connections over time. This integrative approach provides nuanced insights into emergent behaviors and system dynamics, offering an analytical framework that extends beyond traditional modeling approaches. By combining agent-based modeling with network analysis, the model sheds light on the underlying mechanisms governing complex language systems and can be effectively paired with sociolinguistic observational data.

This is an interdisciplinary agent-based model with Monte Carlo simulations to assess the relative effects of broadcast and contagion processes in a multiplex social network. This multiplex approach models multiple channels of informal communication - phone, word-of-mouth, and social media - that vary in their attribute values. Each agent is an individual in a threatened community who, once warned, has a probability of warning others in their social network using one of these channels. The probability of an individual warning others is based on their warning source and the time remaining until disaster impact, among other variables. Default parameter values were chosen from empirical studies of disaster warnings along with the spatial aspects of Coos Bay, OR, USA and Seaside, OR, USA communities.

CapOvCWD is an agent-based model that simulates a captive cervid herd composed of adults and fawns. The model deer population is initialized using data on herd size and composition from captive facility records. Individual deer domiciliary history and annual CWD testing records inform the herd size and sample size (for CWD testing), respectively. The model can be used to iteratively estimate the facility level annual CWD detection probability. Detection probability estimates can be further refined by incorporating multiyear CWD testing data. This approach can be particularly useful for interpreting negative test results from a subset of the captive herd. Facility level detection probability estimates provide a comprehensive and standardized risk metric that reflects the likelihood of undetected CWD in the facility.

An Agent-Based Model of Language Contact

This model is part of an article that discusses the adoption of a complexity theory approach to study the dynamics of language contact within multilingual communities. The model simulates the dynamics of communication within a community where a minority and a majority group coexist. The individual choice of language for communication is based on a number of simple rules derived from a review of the main literature on the topic of language contact. These rules are then combined with different variables, such as the rate of exogamy of the minority group and the presence of relevant education policies, to estimate the trends of assimilation of the minority group into the majority one. The model is validated using actually observed data from the case of Romansh speakers in the canton of Grisons, Switzerland.

HCAM: A Hybrid Climate Assessment Model

This model is part of a JASSS article that introduce a conceptual framework for developing hybrid (system dynamics and agent-based) integrated assessment models, which focus on examining the human impacts on climate change. This novel modelling approach allows to reuse existing rigid, but well-established integrated assessment models, and adds more flexibility by replacing aggregate stocks with a community of vibrant interacting entities. The model provides a proof-of-concept of the application of this conceptual framework in form of an illustrative example. taking the settings of the US. It is solely created for the purpose of demonstrating our hybrid modelling approach; we do not claim that it has predictive powers.

FlowLogo for a real case study

Juan Castilla-Rho et al. (2015) developed a platform, named FLowLogo, which integrates a 2D, finite-difference solution of the governing equations of groundwater flow with agent-based simulation. We used this model for Rafsanjan Aquifer, which is located in an arid region in Iran. To use FLowLogo for a real case study, one needs to add GIS shapefiles of boundary conditions and modify the code written in NetLogo a little bit. The FlowLogo model used in our research is presented here.

FeedUS - A global food trade model
