My name is Roberto and I am a graduate student at The Pennsylvania State University. I am in the “Information Sciences - Cybersecurity and Information Assurance program”, through which I discovered my interest in ABM. I am conducting my capstone research project on how to make ABM more effective in the disaster recovery planning process of IT companies. I learned about ABM through the Intelligent Agents course at Penn State, where we modeled everything from terrorist attacks to social relationships. I was immediately interested in ABM due to the potential and capabilities that it provides in so many areas. I hope to make ABM more popular in IT disaster recovery planning through my research, while learning more about ABM myself.

I am an Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering with over two decades of experience in teaching, research, and supervision in data-driven decision making, operations research, and computational modeling. My research integrates Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), Agent-Based Modeling (ABM), and Reinforcement Learning (RL) to support strategic decision systems in sustainability, investment, and industrial operations. My recent work explores human-centric and multi-actor systems, leveraging simulation-based optimization and AI-driven analytics to enhance resilience, efficiency, and sustainability in complex socio-technical environments. I have published extensively in international journals, reviewed over 75 manuscripts, and am an active member of INFORMS and the System Dynamics Society. My long-term goal is to bridge industrial systems modeling with intelligent decision support, aligning academic research with real-world sustainability and innovation challenges.

Dr. Andreu Moreno Vendrell got the BS degree in Telecommunications Engineering in 1995 and the PhD in Telecommunications Engineering in 2000, both from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain). Since 2005 his research is related to parallel and distributed computing. His main interests are focused on high performance parallel applications, automatic performance analysis and dynamic tuning, and agent based simulation systems. He has been involved in the definition of performance models for automatic and dynamic performance tuning and in the development of a new benchmark for agent based frameworks. He is lecturer at the Escola Università ria Salesiana de Sarrià , associated college of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He is IEEE member.

Current main research interests are concerned on diffusion of ICT among social actors of territorial systems: citizens(individuals and households), enterprises and governmental bodies. Most used methodological tools are , so far, multivariate statistics and Social Network Analysis.
I’d like to apply an ABM approach in the context of my PhD research project, aimed to observe the different modes of collaboration among universities and enterprises and tehir different effectiveness in terms of creation and spread of new knowledge.
I study human culture and cooperation in relationship to the environment. In particular, I study how social norms, institutions and societies evolve, and how they are influenced by ecological and social forces. I strive to use this research to learn how to better build durable, sustainable and just institutions and societies. I use experimental economics and agent-based modeling to explore these connections, and work with lot of wonderful people.
I studied Molecular Biology and Genetics at Istanbul Technical University. During my undergraduate studies I became interested in the field of Ecology and Evolution and did internships on animal behaviour in Switzerland and Ireland. I then went on to pursue a 2-year research Master’s in Evolutionary Biology (MEME) funded by the European Union. I worked on projects using computer simulations to investigate evolution of social complexity and human cooperation. I also did behavioural economics experiments on how children learn social norms by copying others. After my Master’s, I pursued my dream of doing fieldwork and investigating human societies. I did my PhD at UCL, researching cultural evolution and behavioural adaptations in Pygmy hunter-gatherers in the Congo. During my PhD, I was part of an inter-disciplinary Hunter-Gatherer Resilience team funded by the Leverhulme Trust. I obtained a postdoctoral research fellowship from British Academy after my PhD. I am currently working as a British Academy research fellow and lecturer in Evolutionary Anthropology and Evolutionary Medicine at UCL.
